July Issue 2010

     Volume 1, Issue 2

From  the  President

We recently held our Junior Disco and Trivia Night and, from the feedback I’ve received, everyone had a great time. Many thanks to the people who helped out with the planning and running of both nights, along with the people who attended, you all contributed to the success.

The last 2 monthly General Meetings did not go ahead. Apart from Committee Members, nobody turned up, despite the club offering a chance to receive $200 towards a team’s end of season celebrations. These meetings are the forum for members to find out, and have a say in, what is happening at the club.

The offer still stands for the remainder of the season. There are 2 General Meetings scheduled before season’s end, July 26th, August 23rd followed by our AGM September 27th.

Some important dates to remember:

August 8th - City2Surf, still some spaces left on the bus – contact me.

Senior Presentation - September 18th, at St Marys Leagues Club.

Junior Presentation – Date TBA, at Potter Field.

September 27th - Annual General Meeting at St Marys Leagues Club.

To our teams featuring in the play–offs – I wish you every success.

Ken

A HAPPY HELPER

you can make a difference

I strongly believe that there is nothing more rewarding than helping others. It was the energy, passion and commitment shown by the Committee members of the St Marys Soccer Club that got me interested and involved.

My involvement in the Club gives me a sense of worth, plus it helps others. It is an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and open new doors. I don’t have a huge role, however, for my team and the club, every bit counts. If I couldn’t do it then the club would have to find someone else and that is not always as easy as it should be.

I know we are all very busy with work, kids, our families and friends, maybe study, hobbies, looking after ourselves and at times, we get tired. You might think that since you can only do a little, that you cannot offer help at all. Think twice and give a thought to those you see at the club, helping out, it all adds up i.e. parents arriving early enough to help setup the goal posts, to put up the nets and then hanging back after a game to help take down the posts.

If my volunteering has some impact on one of my kids, another person’s child or another parent, then that is payment in full. Actions speak louder than words. Sure, we can all sit back and exchange ideas of what is not being done, how it can be done differently, better, faster. The difficulty is that most of the time it is the same people who carry the load. If you want something done differently, participate and offer to help.

Engaging in your club is important. Hopefully my engagement with the club will encourage my children to volunteer and give a hand. The helpers you see in the canteen or cooking the sausages are Committee Members. They do not do this begrudgingly either; it’s always with courtesy and a smile.

My message is simple: Volunteer your support, engage with others, become involved. It is worth it and rewarding!!

Brad Taylor – (parent, coach and nominating for the 2011 committee, I hope after reading this I’ll see you on the committee or even just asking us if you can help in some small way)

Have you heard of the SQUIRTS?

SMSC has begun a successful new program this year, after there was interest from some parents in starting up a program for 4 year olds in preparation for the upcoming soccer year. At the start of the season they were provided with a backpack, drink bottle, shirt and a soccer ball each.

Tim Whitfield, a father of one of the squirts, trains them on Tuesday nights 5.30pm – 6.00pm down at our fields. Tim is great with the kids and hands out a trophy for the best and fairest player at training, which that child keeps for the week. Needless to say the kids love it, have gained some valuable skills and are enthusiastic and ready to play against other teams next year.

Parking concerns!!!

NO PARKING ON THE GRASS
Image

We have been told that council rangers will start patrolling the grounds on the weekend and fining people that park on the grass! We anticipate your support in this matter by parking in the allocated car spots.

DISABLED PARKING

Also it would be appreciated if you could leave the first car space near the canteen free for disabled parking. We have contacted council about this and are waiting for signage.

KEN'S CHALLENGE - CITY2SURF

Image

Ken Brooke, our President, has challenged himself and anyone else who is interested to participate as a sponsored runner(??) in this years City to Surf.

Ken admits that he probably won’t make the whole length, in fact he may even get waylaid at a watering hole along the way, but he intends to walk over the start line and the finish line.

He has organised a bus if you want to go and support him.

Help him raise funds for the Intensive Care Foundation. Even if you don't want enter the race you can still help. Sponsor him online at:

ATTENTION MANAGERS AND COACHES
